Gonna start with books this month because I read two absolute heatersssss …. both I adored!!! Both of which were recommedations by my friend Michael Bible… thanks Michael !
The first is this book “The Member of the Wedding” (1946) by Carson McCullers…. it is my first book of hers that I have read and I stg I am about to tear through everything she’s ever made because I LOVED this one
I have never read a book that has better portrayed the way it feels to be a 12 year old girl. Desperate to be an adult but also totally unequipped. The exaggerated and dramatic ass way everything feels so unfair… the fantasies of being the center of everyone’s mind, the pain of not being the member of the clubs of the world…… FUCK !!
I love little John Henry, or as Berenice calls him: “candy lamb”
Much of this book is just people talkin around a kitchen table…. and it’s riveting
Iconic opening paragraph":
“It happened that green and crazy summer when Frankie was twelve years old. This was the summer when for a long time she had not been a member. She belonged to no club and was a member of nothing in the world. Frankie had become an unjoined person who hung around in doorways, and she was afraid.”
This book will stick with me for a long long long long time
The other book I read this month was “Train Dreams” by Denis Johnson (2011) and damn…….
Another thing I just freaking tore through
This is just a story of a guy in the American West… what he sees, who he meets, what happens to him over the course of his life. The transition into modernity as told from a hermit in the woods.
So many of the stories told in this book are so deeply fucking affecting… it will definitely be a huge reference for music that I write next.
Friendship (2024) - 8/10
I liked this!!! Unlike any shit I have ever seen…. somehow still not sick of the one Tim Robinson character there is. I’ll check in with basically anything he does.
My favorite part is most absolutely Connor O’Malley if I am keeping it tbh with ya’ll… I’m simply obzest with his ass.
Singles (1992) - 7/10
Epic Soundtrack…. which makes sense because it was one of my gurl Yasi Salek’s Criterion picks for her “90’s soundtrack movies” Collection.
Love the Paul Westerberg tracks and of course ‘Drown” by the Pumpkins..
As for the movie… it’s a fun ass rom-com. Deeply easy to watch. Feels like Sex in the City: Seattle.
Black Christmas 1974 - 8/10
Christmas scary movie… !!!!
Another movie with a guy named Billy in it but this guy is not okay!!!
Fun af to watch with a buddy… will def be on my rotation for the winter times
White Oleander (2002) - 4/10
Random movie I saw for free on Youtube…. sometimes there are gems to be found that way
This was just okay. Everyone in this movie is gorgeous though. Very blonde cast if you can’t tell,
Wouldn’t recommend, wouldn’t rewatch, this movie simply exists.
Billy the Kid (2007) - 9/10
I rewatched this movie this month…. and I may have to add it to my faves of all time tbh.
This at the very least is one of my favorite documentaries of all time…. It’s done with immense care and love. An extremely necessary piece of 2007.
Billy’s mom is my everything.
I don’t wanna say too much about it cause I think ya’ll should just watch it. Then read this follow up interview.
Zola (2020) - 8/10
This is like…. the epitome of the assumption one makes of an “A24” lookin ass movie.
Story is riveting and true though… this is what i was wishing Anora was more like!
Cousin greg from Succession is in this doin his little thing which is great. The acting overall is real good.
Dig! (2024) - 7/10
This was a rewatch. One of the damn best band documentaries… idk why my gut instinct is to give it a 7. Watching this with a friend recently made it a lil tougher to get through for some reason.
Brian Jonestown was playing the festival in Austin that we played this month … felt timely!
Wish Upon (2017) - this is a 0/10 movie but 10/10 fun to watch
The best bad movies are gripping and entertaining in all the right ways…. this is one of those movies.
